Where Is the Emptiness

When Europe had swept away the debris and rubble of World War II and the cultural world of the 1950s and early 1960s became bathed in the “light of Asia” with the aura of the East’s past transplanted into the Western World, present to proclaim Eastern thought to the West and with it the concept of emptiness. The concept and its understanding (it is a common misconception equating emptiness with nihilism) found good grounds in hearts of conceptual artists of 50s, 60s and 70s and even though it seems as if it has been exploited “back then”, half a century later artists still explore possibilities of transforming the meta-visual concept (meta-communicable in a matter of fact) into visual art.

Where is the emptiness?’ is a materialisation of artist’s desire to translate the meta-visual concept of emptiness into an empirical content. Taking on board a selection of approaches, that artists who have worked with the concept have utilised over the years, the artist is repeatedly trying over and over again, understanding, that the road could be the goal itself…
